Social Deals: A New Trend Among Moving Companies

Just when you thought you’d seen it all, a moving company ups the ante and joins the social revolution!

My Google alerts went off with “moving company” and a surprise entry: livingsocial.com.

It appears the Seattle, WA based location of Gentle Giant Moving Company has started a new trend in moving: online group buys.

Frankly, it’s kind of a smooth move.  There’s two available deals:

  • Two-Hour Moving Service With One Truck and Three Movers ($139) OR
  • Two-Hour Moving Service With Two Trucks and Four Movers ($169)

The deal kind of makes me chuckle, because, I’m not sure how much good two hours of manpower is going to do!

Of course they are professionals and can load much more efficiently than the average Joes you hire off of a Craiglist (moving scam).  But, from a marketing perspective, it’s BRILLIANT!

I mean, after having two hours of someone else loading your stuff, who’s going to want to load the rest of their stuff alone or with their dopey friends?  Answer: Not. A. Soul. Solution: I’m almost certain they’ll sell you more time at the current going rate.  And, trust me.  I’m not saying that’s a bad thing at all!  You get a couple of hours, a truck or two and a good size crew for a bargain basement rate and then you pay what the market bears for the remainder of the time.  Sounds like America a deal to me!

I’m going to keep my eyes peeled to see if the trend of group buying catches on with any other moving companies!  It’s interesting times, indeed, isn’t it?

UPDATE:  It appears there is a trend emerging…
